Will I Have Loose Skin After Liposuction?

Many men and women have some excess fat on their abdomen and flanks they want to get rid of. Liposuction of these areas can help to remove stubborn fat that is not responding to diet and exercise. At Ford Plastic Surgery in Toronto, we offer advanced liposuction techniques and perform this surgery with an artistic eye — with the aim of sculpting the shape of the body to create a more flattering silhouette, rather than simply removing fat.

To learn if liposuction is the right option for you, please request a consultation online or call (416) 925-7337 to meet with one of the Royal College-certified plastic surgeons at Ford Plastic Surgery to discuss your goals and needs.

Loose Skin After Liposuction

One of the most common questions that our patients ask is, “Will I have loose skin after you remove the fat?” The answer is, of course, nuanced. Significant changes in body shape due to weight gain or pregnancy cause the skin to expand over time to accommodate the new shape. The more significant the change in body shape, the more significant the expansion of the skin.

The good news is that the elastic properties of the skin that allow it to stretch and expand also allow it to contract, to a point. Every patient’s body is different, and some patients are more likely to have good contracture of the skin than others – in general, younger patients with more elastic skin will have more contracture. Despite our best efforts in the operating room, sometimes the skin does not have the capacity to contract enough, and there is a small amount of residual laxity to the skin.

Ways to Tighten Skin After Liposuction

In our practice, we do everything that we can to help encourage skin contracture and will commonly combine liposuction with an energy device such as Renuvion® or J-Plasma, which has been FDA-approved to help improve the appearance of loose skin. This treatment is done during the liposuction procedure, The Renuvion device is inserted into the incisions used for liposuction, enabling the surgeon to tighten the skin immediately after removing the fat.

In some cases where there is likely to be a significant amount of extra skin, we may recommend that liposuction be combined with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to remove the extra skin.
