Introduction & Indications

Proportionate, pleasing chin and cheek dimensions can have a significant influence on the overall appearance of the face, and today’s porous polyethylene implants offer chin and cheek augmentation patients innumerable options for refining and improving facial contours. Cheek augmentation rejuvenates the midface in a consistent, stable, and predictable manner. In cases of chin augmentation, studies have found that the ideal is for the upper lip to project 2 millimeters beyond the lower lip and the lower lip to project 2 millimeters beyond the chin.

Although our surgeons often recommend injectable fillers for subtle, temporary augmentation of facial features, chin and cheek implants are indicated when a patient requires more significant augmentation or desires a lasting solution. Facial implants can be used to restore youthful contours in older patients, or to enhance the facial shape of younger patients — those whose faces have fully matured (post-adolescence).

Assessment

The initial consultation is an important time to discuss your goals with your surgeon. In addition to examining the dimensions of your face, your surgeon reviews your medical history, lifestyle, and other key factors to help you determine whether facial augmentation is appropriate for you. He also uses computer imaging to help you visualize possible results, and determine the best approach to your procedure. This software enables your surgeon to better understand your desired goals and to select the right implants based on your preferences.

Procedure

Depending on the specifics of your surgery, your chin or cheek augmentation may be performed while you are under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Your surgeon uses porous polyethylene implants. Polyethylene is a type of solid plastic that is used in many medical devices, including hip implants. Once the cheek or chin implant is placed, it mimics the look and feel of real bone. Unlike breast implants, facial implants are solid, and there is no risk of rupture.

Once you are fully anesthetized, your surgeon makes the appropriate incisions. In most cases, incisions are made within the mouth so there are no visible scars. He places the implants through these incisions and fits them securely to the existing bone for a smooth, natural-looking result. He evaluates your face for symmetry and proportion before closing your incisions with sutures.

Recuperating After Surgery

Chin and cheek augmentation both yield fairly speedy recuperations. Because these procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, patients may return home, accompanied by a friend or family member, the same day. Swelling and bruising are normal side effects, and pain and discomfort are typically quite manageable with the aid of prescribed medicines. It’s also advisable to restrict yourself to soft or liquid foods for several days to allow your incisions to heal undisturbed. Most patients feel confident enough to resume work and other social activities in 1 to 2 weeks.

Chin & Cheek Augmentation Considerations

No surgery is completely without risk, but chin and cheek augmentation is among the safest options for surgical cosmetic enhancement. Your surgeon reviews your specific risks with you during your consultation. If you aren’t a candidate for surgery, whether due to an allergy, pre-existing medical condition, or another factor, he may recommend non-surgical procedures to augment the preferred areas of your face.

Common Complements

Both chin and cheek augmentation are often performed in conjunction with other facial procedures, including rhinoplasty and facelift. Combining procedures can transform the contours of your face, adding natural-looking definition that enhances your existing features.

Will chin augmentation make me look unnatural?

Chin augmentation can be done with an implant or with fat grafting. It is possible to achieve a natural looking result with both.
