Tummy tuck surgery can slim the midsection, define the waistline, and create truly transformative results. However, because it’s an extensive procedure, the surgery also requires significant recovery time. Many of our tummy tuck patients here in Toronto want to know one important thing: How can I heal quickly and return to my regular life as soon as possible?

Every person’s body is unique and heals at a different rate. Still, there are a few easy ways you can expedite healing and make the process safe and satisfying.

What is a tummy tuck?

To better understand tummy tuck recovery, it’s important to know how the procedure works. At its core, tummy tuck surgery is a cosmetic treatment that slims and contours the midsection. An incision is made from hip to hip, giving the doctor access to fat, muscle, and tissue underneath. Saggy skin is removed, unwanted fat is collected, and the abdomen is toned and flattened.

How long is tummy tuck recovery?

Tummy tuck recovery times are based on your overall health and the extent of your procedure. Your midsection will be bandaged, and surgical drains will be used for around 1 week after surgery. Most men and women can return to work 2 to 3 weeks after treatment. During your recovery, refrain from any intensive activities during this period and give your body plenty of time to heal.

How to heal comfortably

With a little bit of thought and planning, your tummy tuck recovery process can be trouble-free. Here are a few helpful ways to keep yourself happy and healthy while you’re healing:

  • Sleep on an incline: During surgery, your muscles are tightened and your skin is pulled taut. It may take a week or two for your skin to relax. When in bed, keep your back elevated and your hips flexed to make resting easier.
  • Stay hydrated: Our bodies always need water, but this is especially so after surgery. Drink plenty of fluids to reduce swelling and support your body’s wound-healing response.
  • Take gentle walks: It’s normal to be very fatigued after surgery—your body is going through a lot. However, gentle movement can improve your circulation and prevent blood clots. Take leisurely walks around the house or block when you feel up to the task.
  • Eat the right foods: Protein helps build and repair muscle and keep swelling to a minimum after surgery. Try having a protein shake 1 or 2 times a day or find other ways to incorporate protein into your diet. Pineapple and papaya can also reduce bloating and inflammation and make resting more comfortable.
