Am I a Candidate for a Mini Tummy Tuck?

A mini tummy tuck sounds appealing to many people considering abdominoplasty. It involves a shorter incision than a full tummy tuck and a shorter recovery. That’s why many of the patients we see ask during their consultations if they’re good candidates for a mini tummy tuck.

The reality is that the number of patients considering abdominoplasty who would be good candidates for a mini tummy tuck is relatively few. In this post, we’ll describe what makes someone such a candidate and explain why most patients benefit from a full tummy tuck.

What Is a Mini Tummy Tuck?

A mini tummy tuck specifically targets the lower abdomen, below the belly button. Both women and men may struggle with a “pooch” or here, which is typically a combination of excess skin and fat. A mini tummy tuck removes this skin and fat, but doesn’t address the abdominal area above the belly button. If you have loose or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti), you’re likely to need a full tummy tuck.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for a Mini Tummy Tuck?

In our practice, the best results come from carefully matching the procedure to the patient, not the other way around. That’s why our Royal College-certified plastic surgeons carefully evaluate each patient to recommend the procedure that will achieve the desired outcomes.

The characteristics of a good mini tummy tuck candidate include:

Mild, lower abdominal skin laxity: Patients whose concerns about loose skin are limited to the area below the belly button can benefit from a mini tummy tuck.

Close to their ideal weight: Both full and mini tummy tucks are body contouring procedures, not weight-loss surgery. Good candidates are within a few pounds of the weight they intend to maintain and are in good overall health.

Limited post-pregnancy changes: Women who don’t plan to have more children, with minimal muscle separation and concerns limited to the lower abdomen, can benefit from a mini tummy tuck.

Realistic expectations: It’s important that mini tummy tuck patients understand both the benefits and limitations of the procedure, and that even though the incision is shorter than that of a full tummy tuck, there will still be a scar.

Mini Tummy Tuck vs. Full

The primary differences between a mini and full tummy tuck include:

Concerns addressed

  • Full tummy tuck addresses loose skin above and below the belly button and repairs separated abdominal muscles, if needed.
  • Mini tummy tuck addresses loose skin below the belly button.

Size and number of incisions

  • Full tummy tuck involves an incision just above the pubic area from one hip to the other and another around the inside edge of the belly button.
  • Mini tummy tuck involves a single, shorter incision above the pubic area.

Recovery time

  • Full tummy tuck typically requires 2 to 3 weeks of downtime and 6 weeks to resume strenuous activities.
  • Mini tummy tuck requires less downtime.

Results

Results of a full tummy tuck are more dramatic than a mini tummy tuck.

Cost

Full tummy tucks cost more than mini tummy tucks due to the extent and complexity of the procedure.

Why an Expert Consultation Matters

Our surgeons will always recommend the least invasive cosmetic surgery option for the right candidates. It’s important, however, that you get the results you want. During your consultation, one of our surgeons will discuss all of your options, perform a physical exam, and listen carefully to your concerns and goals.

There is no one-size-fits-all tummy tuck procedure, which is why it’s essential to consult a surgeon who specializes in body contouring. You can request a consultation using the online form or by calling our practice at (416) 925-7337.
