Many patients at my plastic surgery center in Toronto get regular back massages. However, after a breast augmentation it is important to consult your surgeon before scheduling a massage or participating in other physical activities. In this post, we’ll address the timing of getting a massage and resuming certain exercises. This is because lying on your stomach after breast enhancement can put pressure on your implants, which can be risky during your initial recovery period.
At what point is it okay to get a massage?
Most physicians recommend waiting at least 6 weeks after surgery before getting a massage that involves lying on your stomach for more than a few minutes. This is because it takes about that long for the capsules around breast implants to heal and hold the implants in place. The capsule acts like an internal bra that secures the structure and position of your implants. Before that 6-week mark, the capsules are still delicate and prone to stretching or tearing. Lying on your stomach can increase these risks and even cause displacement of the implant.
Options for massage
Fortunately, not every type of massage requires lying on your stomach. Usually, you can lie on your back, a position that provides a safe alternative during those first few weeks after surgery. You might also consider getting a shoulder, head, or foot massage during your recovery to help you relax and take your mind off things as you heal. Just let your massage therapist know about your procedure and ask that they not put too much pressure on your shoulder area.
]When can I go swimming?
Most women can get back in the water around 3 weeks after surgery. After this waiting period, the skin tissues have had time to heal and become more water-resistant. Also, make sure your incisions don’t stay wet for an extended period of time after swimming. Whenever you get out of the water, be sure to dry off properly and avoid staying in your damp swimsuit top for too long. Even you feel back to normal sooner than 3 weeks, it’s important to let your body heal fully.
When can I resume working out?
How long you have to wait before resuming exercise depends on the activity and whether you regularly worked out before getting breast implants. Even though studies show that women who exercise may not necessarily heal faster than non-active women, being active prior to surgery can be beneficial.
If you were in good physical condition prior to your surgery, it’s important to resist the urge to resume strenuous exercises too quickly. Light exercise such as brisk walks are okay fairly soon after the procedure, but you should wait at least 4 to 6 weeks before significant cardio workouts. And you should avoid upper body weight lifting for at least 2 months.
What about chiropractor appointments?
The same considerations should also be applied to chiropractor visits. Although it is not typical to lie on your stomach during a chiropractic appointment, the same principles apply—putting too much pressure on your implants can cause discomfort and compromise results.
In the end, I advise you to be as cautious as possible. If you aren’t sure whether or not something is safe during your recovery or have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to call us. We are happy to explain any post-op restrictions.
