What is recovery from eyelid surgery like?

Expect tightness, soreness, and swelling after eyelid surgery, which can be eased by keeping your head elevated and placing cool, moist washcloths on your face. Antibiotic ointment and anti-inflammatory drops may also be recommended. Bruising and swelling peak in the first few days and subside gradually. Stitches are removed 7 to 10 days post-surgery. You can usually resume normal activities after 2 weeks; most swelling should be gone by 3 weeks.

How long do eyelid surgery results last?

Lower eyelid surgery results are generally long-lasting, although the skin will continue to age. Upper blepharoplasty results typically endure for 5 to 10 years, but it's important to remember that the procedure can't stop the natural aging process.

If you are getting upper eyelid surgery to improve your field of vision, the Ministry of Health in Ontario may cover the cost, provided that an optometrist documents at least a 50% reduction in your visual field. However, if the procedure is performed solely for cosmetic reasons, it's not covered by insurance.
